This past April, my family went to our fourth Monster Jam show and our first at the Superdome. If you follow Macaroni Kid New Orleans on Facebook or Instagram, you probably saw me sitting in the driver’s seat of Grave Digger announcing an exciting ticket giveaway. I’m a HUGE Monster Jam fan!
My family had a wheelie good time! If you’ve never been, let me just say - it’s loud, action-packed, and very family-friendly, even for little ones. With my kids ages 3, 7, and 9, we weren’t sure what to expect at our first Monster Jam as a family of five, but it ended up being one of our favorite family outings yet. Maybe it’s not your typical NOLA-style festivity, but Monster Jam is coming back next year, and it should be on your family bucket list!
Start with the Pit Party – It’s Worth It!
I highly recommend getting the Pit-Pass for the pre-show experience. It gives you early access to the arena dirt floor where you can get up close to the giant monster trucks before they roar to life. My kids were in awe standing next to legends like Grave Digger, El Toro Loco, and Zombie. The drivers were signing autographs, posing for photos, and chatting with fans, which made the experience even more special. Our 9-year-old got a signed hat from El Toro Loco’s driver, and he’s been showing it off ever since.
Kid-Friendly Activities Galore
Monster Jam did a great job including fun, interactive stations for kids during the Pit Party. There was a huge inflatable slide, a Monster Jam RC course (I couldn’t get my 7-year-old away!), and even sand tables filled with mini monster trucks and ramps to play on. Our 3-year-old was completely entertained just digging and zooming her little trucks through the sand. It was a nice balance of high-energy action and hands-on play.
The Main Event
My kids were cheering as trucks flew off ramps, flipped over, spun on two wheels, and pulled off some wild freestyle tricks. Even my husband was shocked when a truck would get stuck upside down and have to be towed off the arena. There was a fun, competitive vibe with fans voting for their favorite stunts via a QR code. It was exciting for the kids to feel like part of the action. The show is about two hours, and trust me, you’ll want to stay until the end when the winner is announced.
Monster Jam at the New Orleans Superdome was an unforgettable experience for our whole family. Whether your kids are truck-obsessed or love a thrilling show, there’s something magical about watching these massive machines perform in person. Between the Pit Party, kid-friendly activities, and jaw-dropping stunts, it was a full day of fun for all ages. We’re already planning to go again next year!
A Few Tips for Families
- Bring ear protection – The Superdome echoes, and those engines are loud! Headphones or earplugs are essential, especially for toddlers.
- Arrive early for the Pit Party to make the most of it. It gets more crowded as the Pit-Party goes on.
- Snacks, food and drinks are available, but can be pricey. I recommend eating beforehand.
- No re-entry – I made the mistake of thinking we could grab our earmuffs from the car between the Pit Party and the main event. However, there is no re-entry allowed and you will be stuck in the Superdome for about an hour and a half between the pit-party and showtime.
- Feeding Baby and/or People with Sensory Issues - There are several rooms for nursing mothers to use and a designated Quiet Room for people with sensory issues which can be found HERE.
